What is the average pay for truck drivers in the state of North Carolina?
Truck drivers, for the most part, are paid per mile. The national average pay is currently 32 cents per mile, which accumulates to around $38,000 per year for beginning truck drivers. You can expect to earn more after your first year of driving.

Are there any out-of-pocket expenses to being a truck driver?
Out-of-pocket expenses are determined by your employer. Most companies have a gas card that they provide for their employees. Other companies reimburse for expenses. Possible expenses may include truck parts, windshield wash, toll road or bridge fairs, food, lodging, etc. Each company is different, so be sure to inquire as to what they do and do not reimburse employee drivers for.

What North Carolina industries are in need of truck drivers?
North Carolina’s economy has several industries that rely on truck driving, especially the manufacturing and agriculture industries. You may find that you will be transporting some of North Carolina’s biggest exports, including paper products, tobacco, brick, peanuts, and cotton.

What are the most populated cities in North Carolina?
Charlotte, Raleigh, Greensboro, Winston-Salem, and Durham are the state’s most populated cities.

Is there anything that can disqualify me from a truck driving job in the state of North Carolina?
Like most jobs, you may be disqualified if you have a criminal record or any past convictions. Unlike other jobs, employers will conduct a background check and take a close look at your driving record; moving violations or DUI convictions may disqualify you from becoming a truck driver. It is also important to pass drug screenings and a medical exam mandated by the Department of Transportation. Some exceptions may be made if you do not pass your physical exam.

Do you have to be a certain age to drive a truck and trailer in the state of North Carolina?
To have an interstate CDL, you must be 21 years old. If you are only driving within the state, you must be 18 years old.

I know that I have to renew my CDL, but how often do I have to renew it?
North Carolina has a five year renewal program and depending on your age, your renewal date will vary. The North Carolina DMV will mail you a reminder card when your renewal date is approaching.

Do I have to take any tests to renew my CDL?
You are required to pass the DOT physical each time you renew your CDL and you must also pass the written exam.

Is there a fee for renewing my CDL?
There is a small fee of $15 for renewing your CDL. Endorsements require a yearly renewal fee of $3.
